On top of Malawi’s financial constraints, long distances, a lack of infrastructure and often poorly trained teachers are major hurdles on the way to a good school education. The literacy rate is around 60% (according to the last survey in 2015), meaning that over one-third of the population cannot read and write. Women are affected more than men.
Zikomo – Aid for Malawi therefore pursues the goal of supporting development work in the areas of education and health. It focuses on the catchment area of St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Namitete, built up by the ZithaSisters and about 1.5 hours by car from the capital Lilongwe.
Every year, some 40 children and young people are sponsored in the Secondary School, as well as 16 students in colleges and universities. Some €22,000 in donations are needed annually for this purpose.
We would like to use this opportunity to thank all donors who made this possible.
